Today on 6 May 2023 King Charles III will be crowned the largest clear cut diamond in the world at his coronation. It is known as 'The Great Star of Africa' which was previously owned by Queen Elizabeth II.
The 530 carats gem was mined in South Africa back in 1905. British claim that it was given to them as a symbol of friendship and peace during colonialism. The British then replaced the name "The Great Star of Africa" with name of Chairman of Mine "Thomas Cullinan"
According to the Royal Collection Trust in its uncut state it weighed 3,106 metric carats and boasted a size of 10.1 x 6.35 x 5.9 cm. This scale, coupled with its extraordinary blue-white color and exceptional clarity, made it the most celebrated diamond in the world.The Diamond's estimated worth is more than $400 Million.
